Northern Virginia

The Virginia countryside is glistening multiple shades of green after several days of rain which broke the back of the heat wave to nearly spring temperatures.  Today the high is 77, the air is fresh with a slight breeze in the wine country and everything is growing.  You can almost hear EVERYTHING growing.

The farmer's markets are numerous along the country roads around Leesburg and brimming with corn, cucumbers, peaches, tomatoes, apricots, cherries, strawberries, fresh eggs, local honeys, and just about anything to suit one's culinary expectations

On the narrow country roads with hedges and wild growth threatening to cover and hide the manmade paths, rabbits, deer and wild turkeys (and any other crawling furry beast may pop out at any moment in the early morning or late afternoon and make evening driving a true hazard unless you drive with extreme caution.  (Much like English hedgerows where pheasant explode out of nowhere, sometimes sacrificing themselves to a farmer's evening meal!)  Several times this evening our headlights exposed deer ready to cross the hedge only feet away.

At my daughter's property in the wine/horse country this fellow and his wingman ran across the field and proceeded to forage on greenery while his ears acted as insect fans batting away gnats and flies.

The serenity of the countryside manifests in quiet and stillness.  The sounds of insects in the forest and frogs in the nearby pond remind one that life is teeming around.  The aromas of myriad flowers, blooming trees, mowed hay and grass, and odors of distant cows, horses and sheep complete the view of rural Northern Virginia.

Time to visit a local winery!

Fabbioli Winery, Leesburg, VA

Fabbioli is one of our favorites whenever we come to Virginia  We are lucky the rain has broken the summer heat so we can have a tasting outside.  Fabbioli is great!  Pairings with each of six wines with a delicate morsel to highlight the fruitiness, sweetness, texture or body of each - Chambourcin, Cabernet Franc, Raspberry Merlot (dark chocolate), Una Pera, etc. The pairings are perfect.  Salud, , Saluti, à votre santé

  1. Nice! Way back when Sibylle and I actually toured some Pennsylvania wineries. A bit too sweet for my taste after living in Europe for several years. But a nice surprise was in looking at the fermentation process they had some brand new stainless steel towers.... and Sibylle saw "Made in Switzerland" on the side. Ah, those industrious Swiss. Glad to see you had such a great time there. On to Amsterdam!!!!
